Toryglen Community Base: Supporting Local Wellbeing

The Toryglen Community Base, located in the Toryglen area of Glasgow, is a vital resource centre dedicated to helping locals, aiming to reduce health inequalities and social isolation. By providing a welcoming and inclusive space, individuals can access essential services, training opportunities and community led activities. These initiatives do more than just provide support, they promote well-being, build resilience and help form connections, bridging gaps throughout the community.

The Base Larder, a community led initiative, is a weekly programme set up to provide discounted groceries, reduce food insecurities, improve health and nutrition and to strengthen connections within the community. For a membership fee of £1 per month, the Larder significantly eases the financial pressure of grocery shopping providing a crucial safety net particularly for single parent and low-income households.

The community base relies on donations and local partnerships to obtain groceries that will be distributed, often gathering fresh produce grown locally to provide healthy, fresh and affordable food options. With CHIP Community Chest Funding (CCF) they were able to supply low-cost groceries with average cost of £17, per family, which is less than half the price of equivalent items at a supermarket.

This funding was not only allocated toward food supplies but also toward equipment, setup and operational costs that keep the project running. By bringing these elements together, the Toryglen Community Base provides targeted and meaningful support that creates enduring stability for locals.

Testimonials

"I volunteer to put something back into the community, it is local and handy for the locals that can’t shop further away or can’t afford the prices of the other stores. I volunteer because it gives me a purpose after bringing up a family who has all moved away and it keeps me going."

-          "The benefit of having the Larder for me, is it is close to my home, pricing is very good and its local people that help out and very friendly and caring."
