Farming in the city of Stoke-on-Trent

City Farm is a volunteer led group in Stoke-on-Trent that, which thanks to dedicated helpers and donations from the local community, has begun restoring the Bucknall Park farm. The farm is free to visit, with a focus on education, inclusivity and affordability to ensure it is accessible to everyone. Volunteers share information about the animals for educational purposes, helping visitors learn everything from what the animals eat to what the colour of their eggs can tell you.

The farm that had more than 120 animals and footfall of over 90,000 visitors per year had shut down and been abandoned for 11 years. It is now being restored and is home to a range of rescued animals. Here they are provided with safe homes, food and access to thorough care.

Fundraising activities for visitors include everything from pumpkin carving and Christmas fairs to Easter egg hunts. While community contributions and donations have played a major role in bringing the farm back to life, City Farm also received over £5,000 from the CHIP Community Chest Fund. This support has helped them further develop the farm and continue offering educational visits for learners of all ages, from nursery groups right through to university students.

Days out at the farm help improve the wellbeing of homeschooling parents while giving children valuable hands on experiences that deepen their understanding of animals.

Community Chest funding has supported the expansion of the farm and its facilities, allowing the purchase of new animal housing and feeding equipment. Visitors have been impressed not only by the improvements but also by the enhanced educational experience provided through talks about the animals. With continued support, City Farm will be able to keep expanding, restore more of the land and rescue additional animals for the community to learn about and care for.

Community Chest Funding can support your organisation with ongoing projects. Visit www.chipcharity.org.uk/community-chest-fund/ to find out how you can apply for funding.

Testimonial

"This fund has been fantastic for us here at City Farm Stoke-on-Trent. It has allowed us to build new paddocks, extend fencing, improve safety for a variety of animals, and provide new housing. We’ve also installed new gates and created an extended rabbit area with three separate runs, helping us expand our animal collection. Additionally, we’ve purchased auto drinkers to ensure our birds always have water, and we’ve been able to hatch more birds, which is always a big hit with our visitors.

We truly believe that City Farm Stoke-on-Trent is a wonderful place that supports not only our visitors but also the mental and physical well being of our volunteers. With support like this, we can continue to grow and improve. Thank you all very much."
