Case Study
Construction Youth - Careers in construction within London
Construction Youth Trust has established itself as a leading advocate for young people entering the construction industry, consistently prioritising those that are underrepresented and have less support finding employment throughout London. Focusing on the Lewisham borough, they aim to improve the wider community as they recognise that an increase in employment opportunities can reduce antisocial behaviour.
Challenges such as unemployment, limited support and restricted access to education often lead to a decline in self-esteem among young people. Groups like Construction Youth Trust play an important role in enhancing young peoples quality of life and guiding them onto better pathways. Access to training, education, CV building and support with interview preparation, participants have been able to find long term work through the guidance of their coaches.
In 2024 their Building Opportunities programme was able to have 28 NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) young people take part, with 57% successfully achieving employment, education or training suited to their needs and aspirations. This was a big win for Construction Youth as they were able to surpass their target of 50% which set a strong precedent for 2025. By June of this year, they have successfully helped 45% of their participants to reach this milestone already.
However, the success of Construction Youth isn’t solely defined by successful employment outcomes. All participants completed two self report evaluations, at the beginning of the programme and the other upon completion. This not only provided valuable insight into the effectiveness of the programme but also allowed for the participants to reflect on their personal growth and progression.
The continuous support from CHIP has allowed them to help more young people secure meaningful employment and equip them with the skills they need to succeed. With £10,000 in funding from the CHIP Community Chest, they not only supported more participants but they increased the level of programme staff they can take on.
